Martial Follower, Martial Technician, Martial Founder, Martial Artist.
The Four Stages of Progression
The only way to understand combat is by combative application. Some would say this is difficult to do when you practice bunkai and kata, which are predetermined actions. This is only true when the practitioner confines himself by thinking these movements are an end in themselves. Our mindset constantly changes as our understanding changes. In the beginning our mindset is that of a follower, we do what we are told and believe what is said. Later our mindset changes to technician, refining everything that was taught. Founder is the next stage, we look at all of our teachings, principles, concepts, and philosophies to find their various expressions. It is also a stage that people can get stuck in as well, they get so caught up that their attention is localized and they become narrow minded and they limit their progression and understanding. All martial arts came from man and each one has its limitations. It is up to us to free ourselves from those limits. Artist is the highest state, our creativity is opened so that we can further analyze our progress and discover our truth in combat and be able to express ourselves in everything. This stage is a personal process, we research all that we can and integrate what is useful to us. Because it is a personal process it is up to you how and if you progress. When I say research I do not mean study other arts (ultimately it is your choice if you do). Research all of your experiences, read different philosophies, buy martial arts books and tapes if you like. Martial Arts are like a library, you can study one but do not forget to check out others from time to time. You can draw upon the strengths of other arts. You can also reveal many things in your own art by the research of others. All of the creators of the various arts were artists, they researched their experiences and learned about everything they could. They traveled from teacher to teacher. They know the meanings of their arts and they continually progressed. Always be in search of new possibilities and new understanding of things to ultimately find your self-truth in our endless journey of the way.
When you begin learning a system of anything you become confined by the structure of that system. It has to be that way in order to effectively learn. But we don’t see it as confinement when we are learning. Before you can be liberated you have to be confined. The system is not intended to be a confinement, but humans have the tendency of limiting themselves to there current conditioning. A teacher has a tremendous effect on the process and progression of the student. I have seen teachers that believe that their art is the ultimate in self-defense, they are comfortable in their limited understanding and they essentially halt their progression.
A good teacher plants the seed of knowledge and acts as a guide so the student can continually grow and progress to his/her greatest potential. I have heard a wise saying that “anyone can teach but not everyone can be a Sensei” this is definitely true. A martial follower, technician, founder can all teach to a degree but it is the Martial Artist that helps his/her students progress indefinitely.
