Shisochin means "battle in four directions". It is of Chinese origin, taught to Kanryo Higaonna by Ryu Ryuku. It is said to be one of Chojun Miyagi's favourite kata in his later years, and that it was well suited to his body.
I'm looking for a man named Gavin White. I'm told he lives in New Zealand, but I can't say for certain. He lived in Japan for a number of years, and trained at the dojo where I am training now, though he trained there before my time. I believe he left Japan about 2 or 3 years ago. If anyone has met him or knows how to reach him, please let me know.
I studied Goju Ryu for over a year with Gavin White in the same dojo that you are training in now, if it is in Izuka, Fukuoka-ken. I left in the summer of 2000. When I left, he said something about wanting to start up his own dojo in NZ sometime in the future, but he had to stay in Japan until his wife went through the proper morning years so that leaving would not look like abandoning dead relatives, something like that. As well as being extremely good at Goju Ryu, he was also a kind of yogi and taught me how to keep limber for Goju Ryun by doing yoga. I never did take up Goju Ryu again, once I returned to Canada, but I have always kept up the yoga. I earned a brown belt in that Izuka dojo, but I would take a white one now if I ever got back into it.
There my info on Gavin White, for what it's worth for you. Any other quetions, please feel free to email me back.
Ciao for now,
Sarah Jean
