I have head that this has quite a few meanings some are : I heard you, Very imformal hello, I'm ready. Used very much in Kyokushin Karate in Japan at least. I have heard that it is very informal.......then again I have seen it said to high ranking sensei. So somewhere in there ......there seems to be somekind of respect given and received. |

I've lived in Japan since 2002, and in that whole time I've never heard anyone say "Ossu" at the dojo. Everyone around these parts greets each other with standard Japanese (Konnichiha, Konbanha, etc), and answers the instructors with "hai".
The only time I hear people saying "Ossu" is outside the dojo. It's usually done in a friendly, somewhat joking manner, akin to a bunch of white guys saying "Yo yo yo! Wuzzup?!" as a greeting to each other. It's generally young guys and men who say it -- don"t think I've ever heard it from a woman's mouth.

I haven't read the full thread, but I took Gojyu many years ago from a teacher from Japan. He said "osu" came from 2 Japanese characters, meaning "heart" and "sword," so it was interpreted as meaning always forward. Say "Osu!" when asked a question or to do something or to go one more step past what we thought we could do. I like that a lot, and it's so much better than the American "yes, sir!" |

In my experience with traditional Karate ie. Meibukan and Jundokan there is no ous. There is only Hai. I have been told by Okinawan Sensei that there is no word ous, only hai.

I read all of these posts a few years ago. I decided that as a female Sensei perhaps it was not appropriate to use. I explained all that I read here to some of the more advanced Senseis. However, 'Oss, Sensei' is still used as a greeting between our American Senseis, Japanese Senseis and our visiting Okinawan Senseis. So, I no longer try to explain that it's Japanese naval slang and inappropriate. I just give a hearty 'Oss' in return and feel happy to be part of such a good school and tradition, regardless of the opinion of others or of its origin.

I just returned from Japan last week and up to par I didn't hear it a single time in the dojo or from any person affiliated with the Dojo. There was a few times that I did hear it: Interestingly between security guards however not between Koban [Police officers] or when Security guards greet Koban. I also did hear it a few times between construction workers. |
